This classic play is a deeply humane and hopeful comic fable written in wartime occupied France that had its Broadway debut in 1948.

A ragtag collection of cafe habitués, led by the cafe’s aging, dotty-like-a-fox proprietress and her three batty old friends, concoct and execute a plan to rid the world of the forces of greed, exploitation and cruelty. But with the artful spirit of Mona Lisa’s smile and no pretentiousness whatsoever, the play is nothing less than a persuasive allegory about the inevitable triumph of good over evil.

Its language is awash in lusciousness and wit, and its warmth and wisdom remain deliciously penetrating ... at this moment in history, a very special comfort.
